Home Smarter Lists, Nested Tags

Smarter Lists, Nested Tags

This update is mostly about giving your lists a longer memory and your tag sidebar a little more structure. Items on different lists can now stay in sync with each other, list items can carry their own running time budget, and related tags can finally live under one collapsible heading instead of spilling down the sidebar.

Lists

Sync a list item across two lists

Dragging an item to a different list has always moved it there. Now, holding Shift while you drag does something different: it leaves the original in place and creates a synced copy on the destination list instead. Check either one off, edit its text, and the other updates to match. It’s handy for anything that legitimately belongs on two lists at once, like a task that lives on both a personal list and a shared project list, without you having to remember to update both by hand.

Reorder items with Shift + Arrow keys

Holding Shift and pressing the up or down arrow now nudges the focused list item one position in that direction. It’s a small addition, but it makes fine-tuning order (especially after a batch of items just landed on a list from a drag) much quicker than picking the handle back up every time.

A summary field on every list item

The list item details pane has a new Summary field: a plain, always-there spot for context that doesn’t need to live in the item’s title. It saves as you type, the same way Notes does, so it’s there for a quick clarifying line, a link, or a bit of background you don’t want cluttering up the list itself.

Time estimates that add themselves up

Add a duration to any child list item, something like “2hrs”, “45min”, or “30mins” anywhere in its text, and Zindash totals up every child item’s estimate and posts the sum on the parent. Useful for roughing out how big a piece of work actually is before you commit to it, without doing the math yourself.

Schedule

Choose which columns show in the tag detail history

The hourly listing in a tag’s schedule history can get wide once you’re tracking more than a couple of things per entry. You can now turn individual columns on or off for that view, so it only ever shows the numbers you actually care about for that particular tag.

General

Zindash remembers your last tag view

Whatever tag view you had open when you closed Zindash is the one it opens back up to next time. No more re-navigating to the same list or tag every morning; the app just picks up where you left it.

Tags Listing

Nest related tags with a caret

Tags can now express a light parent/child relationship using a caret in the tag name, something like “client>williams”. Zindash reads the part before the caret as a parent group and the part after it as a child tag, and turns that into a collapsible section in the tags pane. It’s a small syntax for keeping a family of related tags (clients, projects, whatever you organize by) folded up under one heading until you need them.

That’s this round

Most of what’s here came directly out of using Zindash day to day and running into the same small frictions often enough to fix them: the tag sidebar getting long, a list item that really belonged in two places, a task whose size was anyone’s guess until it was broken down. If something in your own workflow keeps needing a workaround, that’s exactly the kind of thing worth hearing about for the next round.
